You know, I can't get this rhythm out of my head today.

It's not even a song, really. It's just a feeling. A pulse.

Dum-da-dum... Dum-da-dum...

It's funny how rhythm is absolutely everywhere once you start tuning into it.

Like, sitting here right now, if you really listen... the room isn't silent.

I can hear the clock on the wall ticking. Tick-tock, tick-tock.

And I can hear the traffic outside, stopping and starting at the lights.

It's like the whole world is dancing to some invisible track that never stops.

Can you feel that? It's subtle, but it's there.

I was walking down the street earlier today, and I caught myself walking exactly to the beat of my own heart.

It was kind of hypnotic.

Left foot, Right foot. Step, and a step, and a step.

And it hit me... we don't just move through space; we move through time.

We move in waves.

Think about it. Nothing in nature moves in a perfectly straight, flat line.

Everything has a curve. Everything has a cycle.

Think about the ocean.

The waves don't just pour out like water from a tap.

They gather energy... they rise Up... high into the air... and then they crash Down.

Up and down. Tension and release.

It's that rising and falling that makes the ocean feel so powerful.

If the waves were flat, the ocean would look dead, right?

It's the Swing of the water that hypnotizes us.

And you know, human language is exactly the same.

Especially English. It's basically music.

Have you ever noticed how English sounds like a drum solo?

It's not a machine gun, tat-tat-tat-tat-tat. That sounds like a robot.

And we aren't robots.

It's more like a heartbeat. Boom-ba-Boom. Boom-ba-Boom.

There are these Big, Strong words that carry all the weight.

And then there are these tiny little words that just sort of... hide in the shadows between them.

Like, listen to how I say, "Time to go."

I don't say "Time. To. Go." I say "Time-t-go."

The word "to" just disappears. It becomes a ghost.

But the rhythm stays perfect. Da-da-Da.

It's that contrast between the heavy and the light that makes it flow.

It reminds me of riding the train.

I love sleeping on trains because of the rhythm.

Click-clack... click-clack... You know that sound?

The train rocks back and forth. You lean Left, you lean Right.

You don't fight the movement of the train. You just let it rock you.

If you tried to sit perfectly still on a moving train, you'd get tired, right?

You have to surrender to the motion.

Listening to someone speak is just like riding that train.

You can't hold on tight. You have to let the voice rock you.

Lean into the strong words. Relax on the weak ones.

Just let the momentum carry you forward.

It's kind of like jazz music, too.

In jazz, it's not just about the notes you play. It's about the space between them.

It's about the swing. It's about waiting... and then hitting the note.

Make a promise. Keep a promise.

Can you hear that bounce? Make... Keep.

The energy jumps from one peak to the next, like a stone skipping on water.

I think that's why I love listening to people tell stories when they are excited.

Their voice starts to sing.

They hit those High notes, and they drop down to those deep Low ones.

It's a melody.

It's not just information transferring from brain to brain. It's a performance.

I remember when I was a kid, playing on the swings in the park.

You know that feeling of swinging higher and higher?

You pump your legs... Up... and then you float for a second... and then Whoosh, you fall back down.

That moment of floating at the top? That is the silence.

And the moment of falling? That is the rhythm.

You need both.

You can't have the swing without the gravity.

And you can't have English without the stress.

So, imagine you are standing on a dance floor right now.

The bass is kicking in. You feel it in your chest, right? Thump... Thump...

You don't have to count the numbers.

You don't have to think, "Okay, now I move my left leg 30 degrees." No.

Your body just knows what to do. You sync up with it.

That's what listening really is.

Don't listen with your brain. Listen with your body.

Feel the pulse of the sentence.

Where is the Beat? Where is the Energy?

If you catch the rhythm, you catch the meaning.

Because the rhythm is the meaning. The emotion is in the motion.

Just close your eyes for a second and listen to the room again.

Listen to your own breathing. In... and Out. In... and Out.

Even that has a rhythm.

It's the most basic rhythm of life.

Everything goes back to that pulse.

The tides of the ocean. The changing of the seasons.

The beat of a drum. The sound of a voice.

It's all connected.

It's all just one big, beautiful, endless song.

And you are right in the middle of it.

So don't fight the beat. Just ride it. Let it move you.

Up and down. Round and round.

Just let it swing.
